How long will I be in therapy?
Therapy belongs to you. In terms of progress, that depends on many factors. If you show up consistently, follow through with the skills taught, and practice daily, you will see progress.
The amount of progress that you make will be mostly based on your personal starting point. Think…am I able to acknowledge that my history happened, it happened to me, all of me? Are you able to accept that no one is perfect, nope, not even our parents? Are you able to see that, talk about that, and feel that? Are you still blaming others?
Maybe there's space for that, but eventually, we will have to move to heal. Are you able to move? What are your current resources? Do you use them? These are just a few things to think about when determining how long you might be in therapy. Of course, there are also exceptions. That may be you. If it's not, it may take us a little bit longer to get there…but together we will work at getting there.
What are the risks and benefits of doing therapy?
Risks: you face the bad stuff and feel worse (for a while),
Benefits: you face the bad stuff and feel better (forever).
What can I expect from my first session?
The first session provides us both with a chance to get a feel for one another. I will explore a bit about your personal history, present concerns, and what you would like to get out of the therapy.
This session also provides me with an opportunity to share my approach with you and what future sessions may look like.
